Within 10 miles
There is a Sunday morning boot sale plus children’s zoo at Harry Tuffin’s supermarket and garage in Churchstoke a ten minute car ride away.
Montgomery with its fine square has a castle ruin on top of the hill with splendid town view is well worth a visit. If you are at the castle you are half way to the Montgomery War Memorial which gives spectacular views of the local area. In Montgomery there is a good café for tea, wonderful home made cakes and/or reasonable lunches called the Ivy House at the end of The Broad. There are also several pubs, a little historical museum and an ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ of a shop called Bunners. Montgomery is a pretty town worthy of a stroll – see the map in your folder. Seek out the Robber’s Grave in the local churchyard.
Through Montgomery you are soon in Welshpool with Powys Castle, The Llanfair Caereinion Light Railway and canal. There is a good garden centre – Derwin – just off the A490 – a couple of miles. Welshpool has a good and helpful Information Centre.
Historic and picturesque Bishop’s Castle has some good pubs, many which serve food, mini market, garage which sells logs, provisions, gift shops and outdoor clothes.
Clun is also worth a visit, as is Newtown with its Tuesday & Saturday markets, the Theatre Hafren, a small cinema, riverside walk, restaurants and fast food outlets.
Further afield
iIn Wales - picturesque Lake Vyrnwy, the spectacular dams of the Elan Valley, the seaside town of Aberdovey, Harlech with its castle and beautiful beach, Portmeirion, Llangollen, the mountains and castles of North Wales and the Snowdonia National Park.
In nearby Shropshire - Stokesay Castle, Shrewsbury, Ludlow, The Long Mynd Much Wenlock and the Shropshire Hills - are all accessible from the cottage and well worth a visit.
An information folder containing details of places to visit and lots of other local items of interest is available in the cottage.
